SOME 150 people, including parents of children with developmental disorders, gained valuable insight in a special event at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Johor Baru.

The event, themed “Beyond the Spectrum” features a series of talks focused on guiding and raising awareness among parents about autism, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other developmental disorders.

Horizon Hills Development general manager Jim Woon said a special art exhibition by Hanzhen Yap, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, was also on display.

“The main highlight of the event was talks from four speakers, including Yvonne Yap who is Hanzhen’s mother.

“In her talk, she shared her experience and the lessons gained as a parent of a gifted autistic child,” Woon said in an interview.

He said other speakers included Aqua Spirit Swimming Academy founder Datuk Jeffrey Tan, Flying Kids Occupational Therapy principal and clinical director Ernest Low as well as Benny Tee, founder of a TCM medical centre.

“Tan gave an inspiring talk on how swimming can benefit children with developmental disorders, while Low spoke about occupational therapy and how it helps to give a meaningful life to children with the disorders.

“Tee discussed how acupuncture could enhance a child’s potential and assist them in coping with the disorders,” he said.

Woon said in addition to the exhibition and talks, there were also some performances and fun activities for children.

“The event aimed to bridge minds, cultivate empathy and empower individuals within the spectrum and their families.

“We hope the event empowers parents and children while also raising awareness of developmental disorders,” he said.

He added that the event was organised in collaboration with youths from Skudai Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
